    VII. Reading Comprehension
When we think of deserts , we don’t usually think of very cold places; we usually think of very hot areas, full of sand and where very little lives or grows. However, not all deserts are places like we see in the Arabian Gulf or North Africa. Many of them are in places that we wouldn’t normally think of as deserts.
Antaretica is a very large desert yet it is very cold indeed. The average temperature in some areas is -58C! So you can see that places don’t need to be hot to be deserts.
Actually , The only common feature of deserts is the lack of water. All deserts suffer from this. There is a desert in South America, the Atacaca Deserts in Chile, where it hasn’t over 400 years! .
Deserts cover about 40% of the world's land area. The most famous ones are, of course, the Sahara Deserts in North Africa and the Empty Quarter here in the Gulf and when we think of these we usually think of massive sand dunes and oases. However, some deserts consist mainly of stones and rocks, with no sand in sight.
    A ) From a, b, c and d choose the correct and best answer :
    1 – Antaretica desert is :
    a) hot desert b) cold desert c) warm desert d) small desert

    VII. Reading Comprehension
    - Read the following passage , then answer the questions below :
    Home rules
What does the word “home” mean to you ? How do you say the word in French? In Spanish ? In your language ? Although people usually know what the word means, it often has no exact translation . It’s not surprising really , because the idea of home varies from county to country, and from person to person. A home is more than a roof and four walls. It’s the cooking, eating, talking , playing and family living that go on inside which are important as well . And at home you usually feel safe and relaxed.
But it’s not just that homes look different in different countries, they also contain different things and reveal different attitudes and needs. For example, in cold northern Europe, there is a fire in the living room or kitchen and all the chairs face it . In the south , where the sun shines a lot and it’s more important to keep the heat out , there are small windows , cool stone floors and often no carpets. In Britain , even in the town there’s always a garden and sometimes a cellar. They have separate bedrooms and living rooms. But they don’t often have balconies or terraces. The weather isn’t warm enough!
    A ) Answer the following questions :
1 – How do people usually feel at home ?

Read the following passage then answer the questions below :
The huts were wearing white hats and the grasslands were wearing one meter thick coat. Snow had been falling for three days nonstop. In the hut there was little food and my father was in big trouble . He had thirty sheep, a donkey , a wife and six children to feed . It was his problem and he had to find a way to solve it. All that we all did was to look at him sadly.
In fact, and I’m speaking for myself and the donkey, we were happy. I didn’t have to go to school and he didn’t have to work. My father couldn’t take the sheep to the grasslands as usual, so they expected to have breakfast in bed without having to go anywhere. But one of them became our dinner that day . Another one was sold. It was the only way to get money for animal food .
Night came. We sat near the fireplace circling our father who was as happy and proud as the captain of a sinking ship who succeeded in bringing it to the shore safely with the least loss possible. We were very happy because we had enough food for two weeks. For the present. There was no need for the sad faces. We saved them for future use. In two weeks we could need them again .
